By the Lume Live counselling team · Updated July 2026 · 8 min read

Digital marketing is how brands find and win customers online — through search, social media, content and ads. It is creative and analytical at once, one of the most accessible careers to start (you can learn and build a portfolio from home), and it rewards results over pedigree.

What a digital marketer actually does

A digital marketer grows a brand’s audience and sales online. Depending on the role, that means SEO (ranking on Google), performance marketing (running paid ads on Google and Meta), social media and content (building an audience), email and analytics (measuring what works and doubling down). It is a fast-changing field where you test, measure and improve constantly — part creativity, part data.

Any stream leads here. Commerce and Humanities are natural fits (business, communication, psychology of persuasion), but plenty of marketers come from Science too. Because the field is skill-driven, the most useful thing you can do early is start experimenting — a blog, a social page, a small campaign — long before any degree.

Is this career right for you?

Digital marketing suits Enterprising interests in the Holland RIASEC model — persuasion, business, initiative — often blended with Artistic (creativity, content) and Conventional (comfort with data and analytics). It is ideal for self-driven people who enjoy fast feedback and constant change. If you like the idea of an idea going live today and seeing the numbers move tomorrow, this is a strong fit.

Key takeaways
  • Any stream works — digital marketing is skill- and results-driven.
  • Routes: a business/communication degree, or any degree plus certifications and a portfolio.
  • Low barrier to start — you can build real experience from home, early.
  • Best-fit interests: Enterprising + Artistic + Conventional, with a self-starter streak.
