How to Become a Data Scientist in India
Data science sits where mathematics, coding and business questions meet. If you like finding patterns, arguing from evidence and being the person who says “actually, the numbers say something different” — this may be your field. It is analytical work, and the maths is not optional.
What a data scientist actually does
A data scientist turns messy data into decisions. That means collecting and cleaning data, exploring it for patterns, building statistical and machine-learning models, and — the part people forget — explaining the findings clearly to people who are not technical. Related roles include data analyst (more reporting and dashboards), machine-learning engineer (more coding and deployment) and data engineer (building the pipelines that feed everything else).
The path after Class 10
Take Science with Mathematics (PCM) if you can — statistics, probability and linear algebra are the bedrock of this field, and getting comfortable with maths early pays off for years. Commerce-with-Maths students can also enter through Economics and Statistics routes. The honest filter here is simple: if maths feels like a wall rather than a puzzle, look carefully before committing, because it never goes away in this career.
The path after Class 12
- B.Tech in CSE / Data Science / AI — via JEE or state/private entrance exams; the most common route today.
- B.Sc in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics or Physics — a strong analytical base, usually followed by an M.Sc or PG in Data Science.
- BCA / B.Sc Computer Science → specialised Master’s — a coding-first route into the field.
- Integrated Statistics / Data Science programmes — ISI Kolkata, IITs, IISc and central universities (via CUET and dedicated exams) offer rigorous, respected degrees.
