Intern Confidentiality Undertaking

To be signed by every intern before their cohort begins. Please read it properly — it binds you permanently, not just for the duration of the programme.

During this internship you may see or hear personal, sensitive information about real people — including students who are minors, and families discussing distressing circumstances. They allow this only because we promise them it goes no further. That promise is only as good as your word, so we ask for it in writing.

I undertake that:

1. I will keep everything about a client strictly confidential. This covers anything I see, hear, read or infer — their identity, their circumstances, what they said, and the fact that they are a client at all.
2. This obligation is permanent. It continues after the internship ends, indefinitely, whether or not I complete the programme and whatever my reason for leaving.
3. I will not record anything. No audio, video, screenshots, photographs, screen sharing or copies of any session, document, message or report — by any means, at any time, for any reason.
4. I will not write about a case anywhere — social media, a portfolio, a blog, a university assignment or dissertation, or a job application — without prior written permission from Lume Live and full de-identification.
5. I will attend from a private space where nobody else can see my screen or overhear the session, and I will use headphones.
6. I will de-identify my notes as I write them, submit them to my supervisor, and keep no personal copy of anything identifying a client.
7. I will observe silently and will not speak to, question, advise, diagnose or reassure a client unless my supervisor expressly asks me to.
8. I will treat my fellow interns' disclosures during peer practice with exactly the same confidentiality as client material. What is said in practice sessions stays there.
9. I will escalate risk immediately. If a client says anything suggesting risk of harm to themselves or another person, I will tell my supervisor at once and will not attempt to manage it myself.
10. I will report my own mistakes. If I disclose something accidentally, lose a device, or realise I have breached this undertaking, I will tell my supervisor straight away. Reporting an honest mistake promptly will always be treated more leniently than concealing it.
11. I will not present myself as a qualified counsellor or psychologist, or as authorised to practise, during or after the programme on the strength of this internship.
12. I will withdraw immediately if consent is withdrawn by a client or guardian, without asking for a reason.

Consent to recording of your own practice

Practice role-plays between interns may be recorded so your practical can be marked fairly and so you can review your own performance. Recordings are deleted once the assessment and any resit window has closed. This is optional and you may decline without affecting your place on the programme.

I have read and understood this undertaking, and I have read the Internship Ethics & Consent Framework and the Privacy Policy. I have had the opportunity to ask questions about all three.
