The first 48 hours: relationship before results
Whatever the marks, the two days after results shape more than the next admission — they shape whether your child faces the road ahead feeling supported or alone. The practical decisions can wait a day. The reassurance cannot. Lead with, “Whatever this says, we're in it together.”
Great results
Celebrate — then breathe. Don't rush the next decision. Strong marks open many doors, and that can overwhelm. Narrow them to best-fit directions calmly.
Mixed results
Resist the two extremes: neither “it's fine” nor “it's a disaster.” Look honestly at which doors are open, which need a plan B, and note re-evaluation dates.
Disappointing results
First, protect your child's spirit. Marks are recoverable; confidence is harder. Compartment, improvement and alternative routes exist. Decide when emotions settle.
Your practical checklist
- Note your board's official dates for re-evaluation, re-checking, and compartment/improvement exams — before they close.
- Don't make a permanent decision in a temporary emotion. Big choices can wait 24–48 hours.
- Separate the child from the marksheet — no comparisons with cousins, neighbours or toppers.
- Get one calm, informed opinion before committing to a stream, course or drop year.
